Weight Loss Surgery ClassDietary Guidelines for Bariatric Procedures
After your bariatric procedure, your doctor will place you on a modified diet for several weeks as you recover. It is important to closely adhere to these guidelines to prevent complications and unwanted symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, or abdominal pain. As you recover, you will slowly be able to eat more regular foods. If you are ever unsure whether you can eat a particular food during your recovery period, ask your doctor or dietician for clarification. Please note that patients undergoing bariatric surgery at North Memorial Health Hospital should follow the guideline provided by the North Memorial Bariatric Dietician
Bhatti Weight Loss Post-Procedure Diet GuidelineBariatric Surgery Preoperative Diet
In order to safely perform bariatric surgery on our patients, many patients will need to follow a preoperative low-sugar, low-fat, low-calorie liquid diet for a few days prior to the operation. The operations we perform typically involve retraction of the liver during surgery. The liver anatomically sits on top of a large portion of the stomach to be operated on. The preoperative low-sugar, low-fat full liquid diet allows the liver to shrink in size in the days leading up to surgery– this will allow your surgeon better retraction of the liver to visualize the stomach and perform the procedure safely. Your surgeon will review this diet with you at your preoperative visit, and they will tell you exactly how long you should follow this diet for prior to your operation. Although a preoperative low-calorie diet may be beneficial before endobariatric procedures, it is not always required if you are having the following procedures: Orbera intragastric balloon, endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG).
