If you are hoping to lose some weight but haven’t had success with traditional diet and exercise methods, you may be considering a weight loss procedure. One of the more common weight loss operations that we perform is the gastric bypass procedure, which involves creating a smaller stomach pouch and bypassing the entire cavity so that patients feel full faster and consume fewer calories. It may sound like a great option, and it typically is, but that doesn’t mean it’s right for everyone.
With that in mind, we wanted to take a look at who might be considered an ideal candidate for gastric bypass surgery, and which patients are not right for the procedure.
BMI Over 40
If you have a BMI over 40 and it’s been that way for a while, you’re at risk for developing a number of adverse health conditions like diabetes or hypertension. Your Body Mass Index is not an exact measure of body fat percentage, but it is a helpful way to gauge an average person’s health and whether or not they might be a good candidate for gastric bypass surgery.
High Risk Of Comorbidities
If blood tests or other health measurements suggest that you are at risk of certain health conditions, you may be an ideal candidate for gastric bypass surgery because the resulting weight loss can help stave off those potentially harmful conditions. People who are at an increased risk for any of the following conditions may be considered an ideal weight loss surgery candidate:
- High blood pressure
- Type 2 diabetes
- Heart disease
- Certain cancers
- Gallbladder disease
Traditional Methods Aren’t Working
Before performing a weight loss operation, your surgeon is going to want to ensure you really tried to lose weight with diet and exercise. The reason for this is that diet and exercise changes are going to be extremely important after your operation as well, so your doctor will want to know that you’re willing to make the necessary changes, and really pursuing these methods as a first step shows that you’ll be interested in continuing these healthy habits after surgery.
Who Isn’t A Candidate For Gastric Bypass Surgery?
Conversely, some patients simply aren’t an ideal candidate for gastric bypass surgery for one reason or another. In general, if any of the following categories apply, your weight loss specialist may recommend a different treatment option:
- You are 18 or younger
- Have a BMI of 35 of less
- You regularly consume alcohol and have no intention of changing habits
- You are pregnant
- You have other health conditions that could impact weight loss or gain
- You are unwilling to make the dietary or lifestyle changes needed to ensure the surgery is a success.
